Find the model with the right throughput, check the price, and get three quotes. I assumed the Sysmex XN-9100 was the obvious choice for our core lab because its published specs crushed every other option in its class. Turns out, I was completely wrong.

My initial approach to selecting a hematology analyzer was completely wrong. I thought (naïvely) that the “best” instrument was the one with the highest cell-per-hour rate and the lowest per-test reagent cost on paper. But specifications without context are just marketing numbers. The question isn’t “Can the machine run 130 samples per hour?” The question is “Can your lab support the machine to do that, consistently, every day, for the next five years?”

I’m not saying don’t buy Sysmex. We still use it, and the data quality is excellent. Per FTC guidelines on advertising claims (ftc.gov), I want to be very clear: Sysmex makes excellent instruments. The issue was my own naivety as a buyer. I didn’t account for the hidden costs of ownership.

I recommend this analyzer for labs that can handle a non-trivial installation and have a robust supply chain management process. But if you’re dealing with a tight budget that can’t absorb a $15,000 site-prep surprise, or if your team is already stretched thin, you might want to consider alternatives.

Final thought: read the manual, but also read between the lines.

This was accurate as of early 2025. The IVD market changes fast, so verify current pricing and service contract terms before you commit. If I were doing this again, I’d spend less time comparing throughput numbers and more time talking to the vendor’s service team about site preparation, logistics, and training support.

After five years of managing these relationships, I’ve learned that the best instrument is the one that works reliably in your specific environment. Don’t buy a Ferrari and drive it on a dirt road. Buy the right tool for your road.
